The First Ever Gloss University Advanced Paint Correction at the New Gloss U Headquarters

We are thrilled to share the success of our first-ever Gloss University Advanced Paint Correction class, held at our brand-new headquarters in Carol Stream, Illinois.

This was an intensive two day class with passionate students from near and far. The core focus of this class was to immerse the students into the world of advanced polishing and sanding techniques.

This wasn’t just a typical paint correction class; it was a in-depth dive into understanding the “why” behind every technique, which is essential to mastering the “how”.

Behind our Auto Detailing Classes

A Diverse Range Of Paints and Techniques

What set this class apart was the variety of vehicles and paint systems to work with. Our students had the pleasure to work on a 60’s era Cadillac with single stage paint and an early 2000’s era Mercedes with severely neglected paint.

  • Cadillac: Representing an older vehicle with aftermarket single-stage paint, this car provided students with a unique challenge to restore.

  • Mercedes Benz: A newer European model featuring a high solid clear coat, presenting a different set of obstacles and opportunities for correction.

In addition to working on live vehicles, students had the chance to refine their techniques on painted panels. This allowed them to practice and understand the distinct differences between various paint finishes without the pressure of working directly on a vehicle.

Hands-On Wet Sanding and Polishing

A major focus of the class was the hands-on techniques of wet sanding, weather by hand or using a DA (Dual Action) machine. Once the sanding process was complete, the next step involved mastering the art of paint correction to restore the surface to flawless finish

Students practiced :

  • Wet Sanding: Learning the intricacies of both hand and machine techniques to ensure precise and effective results.

  • Paint Correction: Gaining a deep understanding of how to properly use a Rotary polisher to safely and effectively remove sanding scratches for different types of paint systems.

Our focus was not just on the techniques themselves, but on the critical thinking behind them. Why is one approach better than another for a particular paint type? How does the age and condition of the paint impact the restoration process? By understanding the answers to these questions, our students are left with a deeper level of expertise, ready to tackle even the most challenging projects.
